Little Free Library (LFL) is a nonprofit organization based in St. Paul, Minnesota. The first Little Free Library book-sharing box was built by Todd H. Bol in 2009, and the LFL nonprofit was established in 2012. Our mission is to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led Little Free Libraries.

There are more than 200,000 registered Little Free Library book-sharing boxes worldwide, found in all 50 states, in 128 countries, and across all 7 continents—even Antarctica. More than 400 million books have been shared through these little libraries, profoundly increasing book access for readers of all ages and backgrounds.

LFL has attracted high-profile collaborators including Amerigroup, Banned Books Week, Brightspeed, Disney, Good Morning America, Goodreads, HarperCollins, Hello Sunshine, Mercedes-Benz, Penguin Random House, Scholastic, Sonic, and Sony.

LFL has been awarded the World Literacy Award and Guidestar’s respected Platinum Seal of Transparency, as well as recognition from the Library of Congress, the National Book Foundation, the Women’s National Book Association, and more.

What is a Little Free Library?

First, Little Free Library (LFL) is the name of a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that builds community, inspires readers, and expands book access for all.

The organization helps people around the world start and maintain free “take a book, share a book” book exchanges called Little Free Libraries. LFL grants Little Free Libraries full of books to underserved areas through its Impact Library and Indigenous Library programs and champions diverse books through its Read in Color initiative.

Little Free Library book-sharing boxes are placed in front yards, housing projects, community centers, schools, parks, gardens, and other easily accessible locations. The Libraries are built to withstand weather of all kinds and hold 20-100 books.

To be officially called a Little Free Library, a free book exchange must be registered with an official charter sign and charter number.

How many Little Free Libraries are there?
As of March 2025, there are more than 200,000 registered Little Free Libraries in all 50 states, all 7 continents, and 128 countries. Please see our map for more information.

The Little Free Library movement:
The first Little Free Library was built in Hudson, Wisconsin, by Todd H. Bol. People worldwide have embraced the idea of Little Free Libraries and in our St. Paul headquarters, we’re working to strengthen and support them with effective communication channels, programs, events, and partnerships that build on our mission.

How to describe Little Free Library book exchanges:
The correct legal name is three words: Little Free Library. This name is registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office and should be capitalized. Only registered Little Free Library book exchanges may use the title “Little Free Library”; if a book exchange is not registered, it is simply called a book exchange. It is permissible to use the term Little Libraries or just Libraries when referring to any registered Little Free Library book exchange.
