Another year in the books! As 2024 comes to a close, we’re reflecting on the major happenings of the last 12 months. Thank you for your continued support on our journey to build community, inspire readers, and expand book access for all. Here are a few of our favorite stories from 2024:
10. Good Morning America
It was a great year to continue our partnership with Good Morning America (GMA) to share their book club selections with Little Free Library stewards across the U.S. and Canada! Each month, registered stewards can apply to win copies of the newest GMA book club pick. In 2024, Little Free Library stewards received 3,600 books through our GMA partnership!
9. Little Free(dom) Libraries
To commemorate Black History Month this February, Visit Philadelphia launched Little Free(dom) Library, an initiative encouraging visitors and residents to explore Black history and narratives. The activation featured 13 Little Free Libraries that house banned books by Black authors. Bold, vibrant artwork adorns each Little Free(dom) Library designed by local artist Alloyius Mcilwaine.
8. Solar Eclipse
Twenty-five Little Free Little Free Library book-sharing boxes launched on April 8 in the path of totality — the area where the total eclipse of the sun was visible on that day. Recipients in states along the path received a Little Free Library box and installation package, science-related books for all ages, and a celebration kit including eclipse glasses, bookmarks, and more, all made possible by the Simons Foundation’s ‘In the Path of Totality’ initiative.
7. Laufey
“Little Laufey Libraries” accompanied GRAMMY-winning musician Laufey as she went on an international tour this year. Each navy library is emblazoned with a white rabbit, the Laufey Book Club emblem, and features the name “Little Laufey Library” on the charter sign. The Laufey Book Club, which launched in August 2022, now has accumulated a dedicated 110K+ following on Instagram and 20K+ discord members on the book club server.
6. Indigenous Library Program’s New Look
We had the opportunity to collaborate with local Anishinaabe artist Sarah Agaton Howes to create new branding for our Indigenous Library Program. This partnership aligns with our commitment to fostering diversity, inclusivity, and cultural representation in all aspects of our work. The beautiful designs inspired new retail products, which are available to purchase in our online store.
5. Mercedes-Benz USA Build Event
Little Free Library joined forces with Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) employees and Atlanta Falcons player Bijan Robinson to build 175 book-sharing boxes at their headquarters in Atlanta, GA, in April. The event brought together more than 250 MBUSA employee volunteers during the company’s National Volunteer Week program and was the largest Little Free Library build event to date.
4. Dog Man
In partnership with Scholastic, we granted 50 Dog Man-themed Little Free Libraries—one for each of the 50 United States—to sites catering to children and families. Dog Man author and illustrator Dav Pilkey donated 50,000 books to support these libraries, including copies of Dog Man: The Scarlet Shedder, which was the newest book in the series. The first Dog Man Little Free Library was unveiled at a school in Cleveland, OH, Pilkey’s birthplace, on March 19.
3. Little Free Library Cuble
Along with Cūbles, we were delighted to introduce the Little Free Library Cūble, a 3D paperboard constructable book-sharing box standing 4-¼ inches tall, in November. The easy-to-assemble miniature library model, which holds three buildable books, is ideal for all ages. The cutest Little Free Library ever is available for purchase in our online store.
2. Book Ban Map
Just in time for Banned Books Week in September, we introduced an interactive map that highlights two key features: locations of book bans across the United States and locations of nearby Little Free Library book-sharing boxes. This dual-purpose tool not only reveals the widespread epidemic of book banning, but also positions Little Free Libraries as vital distribution points for accessing these restricted books. Since its launch in September the map has had more than 39,000 views!
1. Team LFL Launch
We were so excited to unveil our new volunteer engagement initiative: Team LFL. Groups and individuals in the U.S. can join Team LFL to discover volunteer opportunities in their area that support Little Free Library boxes and broaden access to books. From “Book Restocker” to “Little Free Library Locator” there is a volunteer role suited to your skills and interests. 423 volunteers told us about their impact this year, and they collectively distributed 7,530 books!
To help launch us into 2025 and share books where they’re needed most, please consider a contribution to the Little Free Library nonprofit organization. Donate today!
