Read in Color has expanded in Detroit! Birdie’s Bookmobile, part of the Fall 2024 Read in Color cohort, has brought our diverse books program to a wider audience in Motor City.
Birdie’s Bookmobile is a nonprofit organization committed to ending book deserts and improving children’s literacy and book access in Metro Detroit. They are making quality, diverse, and culturally relevant books more accessible and increasing the number of books children have in their home libraries through free book distribution.

“We are thrilled to partner with Read in Color to help spread the joy of reading throughout Detroit Communities,” said Alyce Hartman, founder of Birdie’s Bookmobile. “Diverse books matter. Thank you, Read in Color, for sharing books with us that expose children to a world of possibilities.”
These Read in Color Little Free Library locations include 27th Letter Books and eight area schools, where school librarians will assist with library maintenance and stocking. Books for the libraries were purchased books locally at 27th Letter Books and Next Chapter Books.

The Read in Color initiative has launched in 21 U.S. cities to date, from New York and Washington, D.C. to Atlanta and Phoenix, with plans for even greater expansion in the future. More than 250 Read in Color Little Free Libraries and 50,000+ diverse books celebrating Black, Latine, Asian, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, and other important voices have been shared so far.
