What has been a wonderful chapter at Little Free Library is coming to an end: M. Greig Metzger, LFL Executive Director, has decided to retire in June 2025. The search for his successor will be conducted nationally by Kittleman and Associates, an executive search firm focused on nonprofits.
Greig has served in his current role since July 2019. Prior to that, he was Executive Director for CCEFS, a food pantry in Oakdale, MN, after decades working in marketing technology and finance in New York and the Twin Cities. During his time at LFL, Greig guided our nonprofit through the tenuous months of the pandemic; moved the LFL office from Hudson, WI, to St. Paul; and responded to a need for more books—particularly diverse books—getting into the hands of more readers.
“On behalf of the entire Board, I want to thank Greig for his outstanding service and commitment to Little Free Library,” said LFL Board Chair Nancy Wulkan. “Under Greig’s dedicated leadership Little Free Library’s impact footprint has grown exponentially, both nationally and abroad, and we now stand at the threshold of our 200,000th registered book exchange box.
“Insightful programs established or expanded during Greig’s tenure, such as the Read in Color initiative, the Impact and Indigenous Library campaigns, the Little Free Library mobile app, and Team LFL, are helping to ensure that neighborhoods near and far have access to countless numbers of diverse books and opportunities to build community and spark reading joy. While we will miss Greig’s passion and drive, we are excited about what lays ahead as we embark on this new chapter of our mission.”
Greig’s time at LFL is bookended by two major milestones: Shortly after he arrived, LFL celebrated the world’s 100,000th Little Free Library book-sharing box, which was granted to a Houston nonprofit, in a ceremony Greig attended. Now, five short years later, LFL and Greig will be celebrating the 200,000th Little Free Library at an elementary school in St. Paul this March.
“As I step away from Little Free Library, I want to express my gratitude for such a wonderful opportunity,” Greig said. “I was fortunate enough to have great staff whose commitment, creativity, and mission focus led to our successes. And I would be remiss in not recognizing our global network of volunteer stewards, without which, none of our achievements would have been possible. Finally, I need to acknowledge all of our community partners, corporate sponsors, and publishing friends for their support. I am confident that Little Free Library is well poised to move ahead and I am excited to see what the future brings.”
