December’s GMA Book: The Last One by Rachel Howzell Hall
The Last One by New York Times bestselling author Rachel Howzell Hall is the GMA Book Club pick for December. Hall’s new novel blends fantasy and adventure, following Kai as she navigates a dangerous and mysterious world. Kai wakes in a desolate land, surrounded by sickness and monstrous beasts, with no memory of how she got there. Her only hope lies in reaching the Sea of Devour, but to do so, she reluctantly accepts the help of a skilled—and infuriating—village blacksmith. Watch the segment.
November’s GMA Book: The Blue Hour by Paula Hawkins
The Blue Hour by New York Times bestselling author Paula Hawkins is the GMA Book Club pick for November. Hawkins’ new novel delves into themes of ambition, legacy and betrayal. Set on a remote Scottish island, isolated from the mainland “for twelve hours each day,” according to a synopsis, a present-day discovery connects the lives of three people, unraveling a tangled web of secrets and deception. October’s GMA Book: A Song to Drown Rivers by Ann Liang
A Song to Drown Rivers by New York Times and Indie bestselling author Ann Liang is the GMA Book Club pick for October. Liang’s new novel is a love story that transcends time and place and is inspired by the legend of Xishi, one of the famous Four Beauties of Ancient China. The story follows Xishi, whose beauty is seen as a blessing to the villagers of Yue. She eventually draws the attention of a famous young military adviser, Fanli, who, according to a synopsis, “presents her with a rare opportunity: to use her beauty as a weapon … one that could topple the rival neighboring kingdom of Wu, improve the lives of her people, and avenge her sister’s murder.” Watch the segment.
September’s GMA Book: Colored Television by Danzy Senna
Colored Television by Danzy Senna chronicles the life of a novelist named Jane, who struggles to create a picture-perfect life with her husband Lenny, who works as a painter. Jane’s dream began after she, Lenny, and their two kids are house-sitting in their friend’s luxurious home high in the hills above Los Angeles. The house-sitting gig coincides with Jane’s sabbatical, giving Jane the time and space she needs to finish her second novel—a centuries-spanning epic that Lenny has dubbed her “mulatto War and Peace.” Finally, some semblance of stability and success seems to be within her grasp. August’s GMA Book: The Seventh Veil of Salome by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
The Seventh Veil of Salome by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, a winner of the Locus, British Fantasy and World Fantasy Awards, is the GMA Book Club pick for August. The author, who was born in Mexico and currently resides in Canada, has written several novels including The Daughter of Doctor Moreau and Mexican Gothic, among others. Moreno-Garcia’s new novel, set in the 1950s during the Golden Age of Hollywood, takes readers through the life of “a young woman wins the role of a lifetime in a film about a legendary heroine,” according to a synopsis. July’s GMA Book: The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood
The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood, a USA Today bestselling author, is the GMA Book Club pick for July. Greenwood’s new rom-com novel follows the story of Delphie, a recently deceased woman who died after choking on a microwavable hamburger. She later meets the hottest man in the afterlife waiting room, but after sharing a moment together, the man is abruptly sent back to the land of the living. Delphie scores a second chance at life—and love—so long as she can find her Mr. Right back on Earth and get him to kiss her in the span of 10 days. Watch the segment.
June’s GMA Book: Malas by Marcela Fuentes
Malas by Marcela Fuentes, a Pushcart Prize-winning fiction writer is the GMA Book Club pick for June. Fuentes’ debut novel takes readers to experience the life of one family living on the Texas-Mexico border with a curse that echoed across generations. Taking place in two different eras between the 1950s and 1990s, “Malas” is a vibrant portrait of two fierce women, separated by decades, but both determined to thwart fate and escape the confines of their lives. May’s GMA Book: The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley
The Ministry of Time by Kaline Bradley is the GMA Book Club pick for May. A British-Cambodian writer and editor based in London, Bradley was the winner of the 2022 Harper’s Bazaar Short Story Prize and the 2022 V.S. Pritchett Short Story Prize. A blend of multiple genres from romance to thriller, her debut fiction novel chronicles the journey of a civil servant who is offered the salary of her dreams working for a new government ministry gathering “expats” across history to find out if time travel is attainable. April’s GMA Book: Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez
Just for the Summer by New York Times bestselling author Abby Jimenez is the GMA Book Club pick for April. In addition to being the winner of Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” in 2013, Jimenez is also a recipient of a 2022 Minnesota Book Award for her novel Life’s Too Short. Jimenez’s new novel chronicles the story of a character named Justin, whose life seems to be cursed when it comes to romance. Thanks to a Reddit thread, his story has even gained online notoriety. March’s GMA Book: Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera
Listen for the Lie by New York Times bestselling author Amy Tintera is the GMA Book Club pick for March. Tintera’s new novel follows the story of a character named Lucy who becomes the suspect in her best friend Savvy’s murder after she is found wandering the streets in Savvy’s blood. Watch the segment.
February’s GMA Book: Come and Get It by Kiley Reid
Come and Get It by New York Times bestselling author Kiley Reid is the GMA Book Club pick for February. On the heels of her debut novel, Such a Fun Age, Reid’s new book explores a provocative and fresh tale about the stickiness of transactional relationships while offering readers plenty of fun, and discerning and layered anecdotes to enjoy. January’s GMA Book: The Storm We Made by Vanessa Chan
For the first pick of the year, GMA selected The Storm We Made by Vanessa Chan. The novel chronicles a dazzling saga of a dissatisfied housewife who became an unlikely spy during a pivotal moment in Malaysia’s history, leading to disastrous consequences for her family. Watch the segment.
