I feel it’s more important than ever to learn as much as possible about diversity,
It is important for all children to “see” themselves in the books that they read. This is why books about boys and girls of all races and religions, who have all different kinds of families, are highlighted at this Little Free Library.
Little children need to see themselves in books they read so that they can know that the world sees them and respects them. I live in a diverse neighborhood and want all the kids to enjoy the books in my Little Free Library.
It’s important not just for everyone to see themselves in stories but to see and learn about those who don’t look like them.
The Black Lives Matter movement has awoken us from complacency. The reality is that there is structural bias in our society at every level and in every institution. This is a small step in righting this injustice. I hope the next generation will be raised in a truly equitable world.
I have been an early childhood educator for years and now I’m a mom to my own little one. I know the importance of having a diverse collection of books and I’m determined to give that to my son, to take with him through life.
