December: The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
GMA’s December pick was The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon. Inspired by the Pulitzer Prize-winning diaries of Martha Ballard, Lawhon’s new book tells the tale of the renowned 18th century midwife and healer who finds herself at the center of a shocking murder that unhinges her small community of Hallowell, Maine. November: Class by Stephanie Land
GMA’s November pick was Class by Stephanie Land. On the heels of Maid, Land’s new book takes readers along her journey as she finishes college and pursues her writing career. The story follows her quest, facing obstacles at every turn, including a complex loan system, not having enough money for food and navigating judgment from professors and fellow students who don’t understand the demands of attending college while living under the poverty line. Despite the challenges, Land persevered as she found a way to maneuver her situation and eventually graduated in her mid-thirties. Watch the segment.
October: The List by Yomi Adegoke
GMA’s October pick was The List by Yomi Adegoke. Adegoke’s new novel is a story about internet culture and tackling complicated moral questions surrounding “call-out” practices in the age of online backlash. Adegoke uses fiction as a tool to explore the gray areas of truth in the online universe. A month before journalist Ola Olajide’s wedding to her fiance Michael, a list floating around social media with allegations includes his name. Watch the segment.
September: Happiness Falls by Angie Kim
GMA’s September pick was Happiness Falls by Angie Kim. When a father, Adam Parson, vanishes in Virginia, his tight-knit Korean American family is forced to dig deep within themselves, and each other, to find their missing loved one in a race against time. Narrated by Parson’s daughter, Mia, the novel follows a family’s desperate search for their father. Further complicating the search, Eugene, the man’s son and only witness to his disappearance, suffers from a rare genetic condition called Angelman syndrome that stunts his speech. The hunt uncovers secrets, revealing the missing loved one to be far from the man they know and love. Watch the segment.
August: Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo
GMA’s August pick was Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo. What is the meaning of family? How does it change from one generation to another? Family Lore aims to answer these questions by centering a multi-generational story about one Dominican American family, told through the voices of its women as they await a gathering that will change their lives forever. Follow four sisters and their daughters as they explore family relationships, secrets, food, love and home. This epic novel may span decades, but it remains an incredibly intimate experience where readers can’t help but fall in love with the characters, their voices, humor, sexiness and wisdom. July: Save What’s Left by Elizabeth Castellano
GMA’s July pick was Save What’s Left by Elizabeth Castellano. June: Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Törzs
GMA’s June pick was Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Törzs. This mystery-filled novel builds a deep world of generational secrets that have haunted one family tasked with guarding a collection of ancient and rare books. Follow the Kalotay family as estranged half-sisters Joanna and Esther reunite to guard their family’s library of magical books and work together to unravel a deadly web of familial loyalty, betrayal and the pursuit of power. May: The Nigerwife by Vanessa Walters
GMA’s May pick was The Nigerwife by Vanessa Walters. This twisted novel centers around a young woman who vanishes from her glamorous life in Lagos, Nigeria, and her estranged aunt who will stop at nothing to find the truth. Follow Auntie Claudine as she starts to dig into her missing niece’s “perfect life,” where she uncovers “dark secrets, isolation, and even violence,” according to the book’s publisher. The Nigerwife examines family bonds, the consequences of keeping secrets and whether one can truly leave their past behind. Watch the segment.
April: Dirty Laundry by Disha Bose
GMA’s April pick was Dirty Laundry by Disha Bose. The thrilling novel proves that secrets, desires and even blood can all come out in the wash. In her debut novel, Bose reinvents age-old ideas of love and deceit that can make even the most dysfunctional life look so-called “perfect.” The novel centers on Ciara Dunphy, who appears to have it all — a loving husband, perfect children and a beautiful home in a small Irish village — until she’s found murdered and the pristine façade comes crumbling down. March: Pineapple Street by Jenny Jackson
