Team LFL Connects with Communities in 2025

By Sarah Howd

Team LFL Volunteers

In 2024 we launched Team LFL—a volunteer engagement initiative connecting individual volunteers and community groups with opportunities to support our network of Little Free Libraries and programs. This year more than 1,000 volunteers participated with Team LFL, distributing over 18,000 books and meeting over 50 steward support requests.

By supporting Little Free Libraries and programs, volunteers actively advance our mission to build community, inspire readers, and expand book access for all. Plus volunteers report that flexible opportunities through Team LFL allow them to meet their personal community service goals and fulfill their desire to form neighborhood connections.

As this year comes to a close, we want to highlight a few amazing volunteers!

Elena S. & Claire B.—El Paso, TX

Elena and her mother Claire volunteered together to distribute books to Little Free Libraries in areas where books are scarce. Claire shared, “This was such a wonderful experience—we decided to go to book desert areas in sections of town we had never been before; saw the very real need and were so grateful to refill almost empty libraries… Thank you, LFL, for the instance to volunteer… and chat with my daughter of the importance of reading and how one should never take access to books for granted.”

Vicky S.—Syracuse, NY

Vicky got involved as a book distribution volunteer and connected with other stewards and Little Free Library supporters at a Central New York meet up. She identified ways to make it easier to volunteer, including keeping a bag of books in her car. Vicky collaborated with other volunteers to support a damaged and empty Little Free Library in their area. While one volunteer repaired the library, Vicky helped refill it. Vicky said, “The whole experience flowed nicely and gave me such a level of accomplishment. Teamwork makes the dream work!”

Bianca C.—Union City, GA

Bianca hosted a Little Free Library Week celebration called “Celebrando Juntos: A Family Fiesta at the Little Free Library.” Bianca worked with local university students to host family activities during the event. Bianca wrote, “My favorite moment was giving out bilingual books. They are a rare commodity in this area. I was happy to see the attendees’ faces when they saw the books were in English and Spanish!” She also wrote, “You could say that it felt like what a community event should feel like!”

Gael H.—Little Rock, AR

Gael, the leader of a nonprofit called Partnership for Community Enrichment, is leading a Team LFL chapter in the greater Little Rock area. This group is creating community awareness of Little Free Libraries and opportunities for people to volunteer to support Little Free Libraries in Central Arkansas.

This year Gael and the Partnership for Community Enrichment team hosted “Oceans of Stories: A Festival for Children.” This community festival was packed with amazing resources encouraging families to read together—including a storyteller, community literacy organizations, and a nine-year-old author who had published his own book. They also debuted a new Little Free Library to be installed at the venue. They distributed 22 boxes of books to 350+ attendees and shared additional books with local Little Free Library stewards.

Jonathan C.—Oakland, CA

Jonathan shared books with Little Free Libraries in book deserts around Oakland. He met several stewards and Little Free Library visitors along the way. He wrote, “It was a joyful, meaningful, and heartwarming experience to distribute books with themes on kindness, compassion, diversity, inclusion, acceptance, community, advocacy, and hope!”

Brennan S.—Cranston, RI

Brennan planned a book drive and promoted it by making posters and placing collection boxes throughout his community. After collecting books, he checked them all for any writing or damage and then loaded them up to deliver to Little Free Libraries. He collected and distributed 333 books! Brennan said, “Volunteering for Little Free Library was very enjoyable and helpful. It was easy to work on it a little bit at a time especially with a busy schedule.”

Thank you to all of the volunteers who made an impact on their communities this year! Join Team LFL to help us achieve our vision of a Little Free Library in every community and a book for every reader!
