Impact Library Program Steward Stories, August 2025

By Sarah Nelson

Little Free Library’s Impact Library Program provides no-cost Little Free Library book-sharing boxes to underserved communities where they can make a meaningful impact on book access and literacy engagement. This month we heard from two stewards who were previously granted libraries through our Impact Library Program and wanted to share their stories.

Additionally, we granted 15 Impact Library Packages to applicants from schools, libraries, and nonprofit organizations in August 2025. These new Little Free Libraries will be expanding book access from New Carrollton, MD, to Mabton, WA, and many areas in between! Learn more about where we’ve placed Impact Library Program awards over the years.

“The library is thriving with excellent attendance. It is checked weekly, and we have witnessed the community’s care for the new library as well as their love and enthusiasm for reading. The Little Free Library has been warmly embraced, with community members filling it with books as soon as it opened.

We are extremely grateful for this opportunity to share the love of books with one of our smaller communities and wish to extend our thanks to you.”

“We have the pleasure of being stewards to a donated Little Free Library, sponsored by SunMaid. Our Little Free Library is off the beaten path and is nestled in a quaint older neighborhood, just outside the city limits. Being an early riser, there’s something special about a fresh cup of coffee, a good book, and the sound of a rooster crowing. My parents were avid readers and encouraged empowerment through reading. Growing up in a rural area, with harsh winters and long school bus rides, books often became my playground. With a book, I could run alongside a Velociraptor, explore a Costa Rican jungle, learn about diverse subjects and cultures, and brave the world with my friend, Ramona Quimby. I was never alone, even when the school bus seat next to me was empty. I was raised a reader and am also currently raising a reader, and I know the importance of getting books into the hands of children and families. Books can make a big world seem less lonely, and they feed hungry minds. Books empower and inspire all ages. We are happy to share the joy of reading and helping make books accessible to everyone, every age. Our Little Free Library is just getting started. Books are flying off the shelf and we are thrilled that our neighbors are also adding books to be shared. We will be hosting our first book drive very soon!”
