Little Free Library’s Impact Library Program provides no-cost Little Free Library book-sharing boxes to underserved communities where they can make a meaningful impact on book access and literacy engagement. This month we heard from two stewards who were previously granted libraries through our Impact Library Program and wanted to share their stories.
Additionally, we granted 30 Impact Library Packages to applicants from schools, libraries, and nonprofit organizations in December 2024. These new Little Free Libraries will be expanding book access from Goodridge, MN, to San Benito, TX, and many areas in between! “The thing that most surprised me was the community’s help. The location that I picked to put the library isn’t in the best neighborhood. But between the senior center that it sits beside and the community members, it has a steady flow of books. When I picked the location, it was because I taught students that lived in that neighborhood, and I knew it lacked books. I assumed that I would be the only one contributing books to it, but I am completely wrong. It always has books! I have yet to have to completely refill it! When it came to installing the library, the ground was very hard, and my mother and I struggled installing the post. A neighbor stopped and helped us dig the hole. I was reminded that community is very necessary to have and that people are always willing to help when you’re doing a good thing.
I think my Little Free Library has impacted the community by simply providing books. When sourcing books, I try my best to provide a variety of books. The ones that are taken first are the ones written by African Americans and Hispanic people. That tells me there is a need in that community for books written by people of color. As a teacher, I know that, but it is good to see that in action.”

“Many of our students are avid readers of graphic novels, and they especially love books by Dav Pilkey. These books have opened up a world to many who have not typically enjoyed reading. Our school is a title one school, with 70% our population on free or reduced lunch.
