About Little Free Library
Little Free Library is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in St. Paul, Minnesota. Our mission is to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led Little Free Library book-exchange boxes. We not only help individuals start Little Free Libraries, but we also run programs to fill book deserts and grant libraries to underserved areas.
Your organization can support programs like the Impact Library Program, the Indigenous Library Program, and Read in Color. These programs bring Little Free Libraries and books where they’re needed most.

Why Does Book Access Matter?
The United States is facing a growing literacy crisis.
- 64% of U.S. fourth-graders read below grade level.
- Children who build the literacy skills they need to read proficiently by the end of third grade are 4x more likely to graduate from high school.
- 60% of low-income students lack access to books at home.
- Two in three children living in poverty have no books to call their own.
Little Free Library book-sharing boxes play an essential role by providing 24/7 access to books (and encouraging a love of reading!) in areas where books are scarce. At Little Free Library, we’re working to fill book deserts and grant libraries to underserved communities through our granting programs.

Little Free Library Program Sponsorship Opportunities
Support the Impact Library Program
Through the Impact Library Program, we provide no-cost Little Free Library book exchanges to communities throughout the United States and Canada where books are scarce.
- Over 3,000 libraries granted since 2016
- 93% of program participants say their libraries are in communities where book access is somewhat or very limited
2025 program goal: grant 225 new Little Free Library boxes full of books to under-resourced communities.
Support the Read in Color Program
Read in Color distributes books that provide perspectives on racism and social justice; celebrate BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized voices; and incorporate experiences from all identities for all readers.
- 23 cities launched
- 250+ libraries granted
- 50,000+ diverse books shared
- Community partner-centered
Read in Color operates two cohorts per year, one in the Spring/Summer and one in the Fall/Winter. Each cohort consists of 2-3 member organizations that place networks of Little Free Library book-sharing boxes throughout their community, filling them with new, high-quality books that reflect the people who will visit the libraries.
2025 program goal: support two cohorts of 2-3 organizations each in placing Little Free Library book-sharing boxes full of diverse books throughout their communities.
Support the Indigenous Library Program
Through the Indigenous Library Program, we grant no-cost Little Free Library boxes full of books to Native American and First Nations communities with limited book access throughout the United States and Canada.
- Launched in June 2023
- Focuses on building relationships
- Culturally responsive program
2025 program goal: grant 100 new Little Free Library book-exchange boxes filled with diverse books to Indigenous communities in the U.S. and Canada.
Book Sustainer Sponsorship
Help us provide ongoing book support to Little Free Libraries in areas where quality new and gently used books are difficult to find. Impact Library Program, Indigenous Library Program, and Read in Color program grant recipients have an ongoing need for books to keep their library stocked. Book sustainer sponsorships are available for libraries in the United States and Canada (where available). Monetary sponsorships or in-kind donations available in one-time or recurring support options.
