Impact Library Program Steward Stories, February 2024

By Sarah Nelson

Little Free Library’s Impact Library Program provides no-cost Little Free Library book-sharing boxes to underserved communities where they can make a meaningful impact on book access and literacy engagement. This month we heard from two stewards who were previously granted libraries through our Impact Library Program and wanted to share their stories.

Additionally, we granted 21 Impact Library Packages to applicants from schools, libraries, and nonprofit organizations in February 2024. These new Little Free Libraries will be expanding book access from Philadelphia, PA to Las Vegas, NV and many areas in between! Learn more about where we’ve placed Impact Library Program awards over the years.

“Washington Street Park is a favorite playground for several local children’s programs as well as neighborhood families. D-Up is a non-profit program that provides after-school and summer programs for elementary and middle school children. This year a pre-k program was added, and the children visit the park frequently for playtime and recreation. The attached Facebook photo and comments between the D-up director and the library steward is just one illustration of the daily impact the library has for the children who visit the library.

The library is located in a zip code with very low literacy and education levels among the adult residents. The Little Free Library is one important piece of several programs focusing on combating poverty and improving education and self-reliance of community members.”

“On behalf of the YWCA FamilyWorks program, we are so grateful to be the recipient of a Little Free Library for the Dearborn Homes community. This generous grant will allow promote childhood literacy and increase book access to the over 200 children living in the neighborhood. We are committed to offering diverse books in the library as we are firm believers that every child should be able to see themselves in the pages of a book. This gift of literacy will create a stronger, more connected community!”
