Beyond Adornment Club Brings Read in Color to Los Angeles

By Sarah Nelson

Read in Color has arrived in Los Angeles! Beyond Adornment Club (B.A.C.), part of the Spring 2024 Read in Color cohort, celebrated Little Free Library launches at Birthworkers of Color Collective, Loc Lov LA, and Earle’s on Crenshaw. B.A.C. is a book club and sis-STAR circle dedicated to empowering economic and mental health and critical literacies of Black, Indigenous, and other marginalized girls. Placing Little Free Libraries throughout LA helps support this mission.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of the Read in Color library network!” said Amina Mirza of Birthworkers of Color Collective. “Our Little Free Library celebrates inclusivity, social justice, and diverse voices, fostering a community of empathy and understanding through literature.”

Birthworkers of Color collective hosted their launch event on April 2, 2024, which is International Children’s Book Day. The event included children’s story time, art build, and a dance party.

Read in Color libraries were also placed at Loc Lov LA and Earle’s on Crenshaw. Loc Lov is an award-winning hair salon specializing in natural hair care and elegant loc artistry. And Earle’s is a storied hot dog stand turned storefront with a commitment to the empowerment of Black and Brown people and supporting people from the Crenshaw Community.

The Read in Color initiative has launched in 19 U.S. cities to date, from New York and Washington, D.C. to Atlanta and Phoenix, with plans for even greater expansion this year. More than 250 Read in Color Little Free Libraries and 45,000+ diverse books celebrating Black, Latinx, Asian, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, and other important voices have been shared so far. Learn more and sign the Read in Color pledge!
