Impact Library Program Steward Stories, March 2024

By Sarah Nelson

Little Free Library’s Impact Library Program provides no-cost Little Free Library book-sharing boxes to underserved communities where they can make a meaningful impact on book access and literacy engagement. This month we heard from two stewards who were previously granted libraries through our Impact Library Program and wanted to share their stories.

Additionally, we granted 17 Impact Library Packages to applicants from schools, libraries, and nonprofit organizations in March 2024. These new Little Free Libraries will be expanding book access from Spruce Pine, NC to Akron, CO and many areas in between! “My Little Free Library is up and beginning to have some traffic with the longer days. Last weekend some neighbors stopped by to browse and the neighborhood kids were very very interested as well. I told them they are welcome to visit but please bring a parent with them (for supervision). Within the hour 3 little kids had urged their parents to bring them to the Little Free Library, and I was able to visit with them as well. I’m loving the sense of community that this impact library is making in our small neighborhood already.”

“Our Little Free Library sits outside a FQHC, which stands for a Federally Qualified Health Center. We serve primarily low-income families, children, and the underserved population in healthcare, pediatrics, dental, behavioral health, recovery, and maternal infant health. What we didn’t know was what interest there would be in our Little Free Library. Knowing there is only one small library in the city of Muskegon Heights, that many families likely don’t have access to, and literacy in this community is low. We have been thrilled to see community members and patients coming to the library and choosing books. We have community partners that help us refill the library with donated books and we are filling it more frequently than ever! It is is blessing to add reading into peoples lives. It truly makes a difference. Thank you for granting us this Impact Library!”
