Impact Library Program Steward Stories, April 2023

By Sarah Nelson

Little Free Library’s Impact Library Program provides no-cost Little Free Library book-sharing boxes to underserved communities where they can make a meaningful impact on book access and literacy engagement. This month we heard from two stewards who were previously granted libraries through our Impact Library Program and wanted to share their stories.

Additionally, we granted 27 Impact Library Packages to applicants from schools, libraries, and nonprofit organizations in April 2023. These new Little Free Libraries will be expanding book access from Tampa, FL to Ogden, UT and many areas in between! Learn more about where we’ve placed Impact Library Program awards over the years.

“I’m a teacher at Parkland Pre-Engineering Middle School in El Paso, Texas and we serve over 1,200 students every year. I’ve been the steward for a few years now, and it has allowed me to give out thousands of books so far and even use it as a life skills activity for my special education students. The impact has been amazing and far reaching. We have 20+ students and members of the community visit and take books every single day. Our public library is a few miles away, so I am confident that we are the main source for literature and brand-new books in our community.

The Little Free Library is a whole lot more popular than I ever expected. It’s a constant effort to keep it stocked, even more so because I only stock it with brand-new books.”

“The Little Free Library has been an amazing addition to our community and school. Students love it. You can check us out at @hackensacklittlefreelibrary on Instagram. Students and families stop by on their way to and from school. They are reading more and even donating books from home! It’s been wonderful.

It’s a lot more work than I anticipated, and that’s because we are at a school. We love getting help from parents and the neighbors. We learned diverse books are important and that the kids love themes, but then we have to make sure we have books on all reading levels!”

Help us bring Little Free Libraries full of books where they’re needed most. Donate today! When you donate, you help us provide libraries to communities like these.
