As an African American educator I see children in dire need of diverse books and someone they feel that they themselves can relate to. Representation is a must to enhance a sense of unity in our world.
I got my LFL with the intention of providing books to my neighborhood children. I live in an under-resourced community and want to promote literacy. As a reading teacher, I know the power of books and of literacy and want the children in my community with books that represent them.
Representation matters and we learn from reading about each other’s diverse cultures and experiences.
Our town is very small and lacks culture so I’ve been stocking our Little Library with diverse authors in hopes of spreading acceptance and a zero-tolerance policy for bullying, racial profiling, or racial slurs in my hometown.
The importance of seeing yourself in the stories that you read cannot be understated for helping to develop a love of reading in young children. Acknowledging our diversity is key to acceptance and empathy.
So all children see themselves represented in literature that will inspire them to their fullest potential ❤️
