My mother was a librarian and, obviously, encouraged me to read -everything. She told me at a young age that the only way to understand others is to read what they write. She was right.
Children need to see themselves while reading books. You have to imagine you are the characters. Reading in color makes that point.
Sharing diverse literature is one step of many to affect meaningful change in our society. Books facilitate and initiate conversations that must happen, actions that must be taken in order to elevate marginalized voices.
My neighborhood is very diverse so I want to ensure that everyone has something that speaks to them. Ensuring children see themselves in stories is an important step to building their self confidence.
