In early July 2015, there was a rash of book “theft” among the 6 Little Free Libraries in Lincoln, Nebraska.
We’ve heard from dozens of stewards who’ve had this experience: it’s disheartening and can feel like a personal attack to come out to your Little Library and discover that all of the books have been taken overnight.
What does this have to do with Library Takeovers?
Well, the Lincoln Little Libraries, which have their own Facebook group, got some unexpected help!
The University of Nebraska Press, with the help of veteran Lincoln Little Free Library steward Bob DiPaolo, discovered the local network of Little Free Libraries and decided to do a city-wide takeover of all 6 Little Libraries!
“[University of Nebraska Press] had never heard of takeovers before but they loved the concept, especially doing it ‘city-wide.’ They indicated they would like to do another one in Lincoln in the future!” reported DiPaolo.
The timing could not have been better.
“It was incredibly lucky timing,” said Rosemary Vestal, publicity manager for University of Nebraska Press. “This did not come from the Libraries being emptied out…but it was really lucky that we could help out in this way.”
University of Nebraska Press has chosen 3 of their titles to feature during the takeover, which will take place on Saturday, August 1st 2015.
Several copies of each title will be donated to each of the 6 Little Free Libraries in Lincoln; they’re promoting the takeover with a Facebook event and local media coverage.
What a smart way for a local publisher to promote their books while supporting the Lincoln network of Little Free Libraries! We hope to see more large-scale takeovers happen in the future.
As a steward reaching out to publishers, keep in mind that a takeover doesn’t have to just be for your own Little Library – it can be much bigger than that!
