Little Free Libraries Share the Story of Lucky the Leprechaun

By Margret Aldrich

It’s a lucky day for readers! Three thousand Little Free Library stewards are adding the book The Magic Inside to their libraries, courtesy of Lucky Charms! In addition, General Mills is donating twenty little libraries to high-need communities across the country.

The Magic Inside is a universal coming-of-age story of how Lucky the Leprechaun discovered his magic. Families can enjoy the book at select Little Free Libraries across the country, and with Taye Diggs — dad, singer, actor, and children’s book author — as he reads the first chapter live and hosts a Q&A on Instagram from the @LuckyCharms handle for National Read Across America Day on March 2 at 5pm PST. Afterwards, you can catch him reading the full book on BuzzFeed.

“Reading is something I’ve always been truly passionate about and it’s my favorite way to spend time together with my son,” Diggs, author of I Love You More Than … and My Friend, told the Lucky team. “Like Lucky in The Magic Inside, we’ve all felt pulled in different directions or like we didn’t fit in at some point, and to see that struggle reflected in a favorite and magical character is so important for our kids to help them not feel alone as they learn to celebrate what makes them them.”

In addition to The Magic Inside, the 3,000 Little Free Library stewards received the book The Night Before St. Patrick’s Day and a kit for decorating their libraries for the magically March holiday.

General Mills is also funding twenty new Little Free Libraries in underserved communities. The libraries are being placed through our Impact Library Program, which grants little libraries full of books to locations where books are scarce. The special Lucky library pictured below was granted to The Boys & Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley in California. They also received two additional red Little Free Libraries for their other locations.

Thank you, General Mills (and Lucky), for supporting our mission to increase book access for all readers!
