The board serves as our governing body and helps uphold our mission to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access for all. Why did you decide to join Little Free Library’s board of directors?
As an active steward and literacy advocate, I decided to join the Board of Directors because I was excited about Little Free Library’s mission and efforts to spread the joy of literacy through access to books. My dear friend and former teacher colleague (who is also a steward) encouraged me to be part of this next phase for Little Free Library. I am thrilled she brought me to being a more active part of this fantastic community.
What is your professional background?
I have served as a classroom teacher, teacher educator, school/district administrator, and literacy/reading coach. I have published multiple books and articles on impacting students’ literacy development and supporting teachers to meet the needs of emerging readers and writers. Now, I conduct professional development for teachers in schools primarily across the northeast and also nationally/internationally through my literacy network of professional organizations. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors at LFL, I serve as Vice President of the International Literacy Association.
How has your expertise helped Little Free Library achieve its mission to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and increasing book access for all?
I have been an active member of the Program Committee and was a proud contributor to the Read in Color Initiative. At the same time, I provided guidance during LFL’s launch into offering digital programs and events.
What is the Little Free Library project or initiative you’re most passionate about?
I am most passionate about the Read in Color Initiative because access to diverse books and content is one of the most important fundamental rights readers must have (in addition to access). I have proudly represented the LFL Board of Directors at multiple library dedications for Read in Color and look forward to how this initiative continues to grow and evolve.
Do you have a Little Free Library of your own?
Yes! My official launch date was August 4, 2019. My library sits on the edge of the Watchung Reservation at the edge of my property in Mountainside, NJ. Because of its perch on the Watchung Mountain, we celebrate the seasons of our library from winter-themed events with views of NYC to summer reading with neighborhood visitors taking advantage of the local trails and nature. The picture below captures the “seasons.” I love the visitors we get on a daily basis! Our neighbors describe our library as the “glue” of our community, as it brings folks of all ages and walks of life together around a joy of reading.
What do you like to do when you’re not working with Team LFL?
I enjoy working with teachers and students in schools or spending time gardening, running, taking trips to the beach, or enjoying free time with my Maltese and partner.
Anything else you’d like to share?
As a Board Member, I am also a proud annual donor and supporter of Little Free Library as a non-profit. While creating and building a little library is one way to get started, it is my belief that every dollar raised for LFL brings libraries to communities in need, supports existing programs, and sparks new energy with endless possibilities around all things joy and reading.
